Skill Checks

Skill checks are used to determine the outcome of an encounter.

The following is the formula to determine your score.

   Score = m + as + sd + t + e + r

where

  • m = Current Mood Bonus
    • Based on your boy's current mood, not the mood score.
      • Ecstatic = +40
      • Very Happy = +20
      • Happy = +10
      • Normal = 0
      • Sad = -10
      • Very Sad = -20
      • Depressed = -40
  • as = Ability Score Bonus
    • (Ability Score - 5) * 10
    • Any ability score below 5 will give you a negative bonus.
      • Athletics: Strength
      • Math: Smarts
      • History: Smarts
      • Science: Smarts
      • English: Smarts
      • Swimming: Endurance
      • Acting: Charm
      • Cooking: Creativity
      • Exhibition: Sense
      • Naturism: not added yet
  • sd = Skill LevelBonus
    • sd = [Skill Level - (Skill Check Difficulty - 1)] * 20
    • Skill Check Difficulty varies depending on the encounter.
  • t = TraitsBonus
    • Certain traits can give bonuses for specific skill checks.
      • Athletics: Athletic = +20
      • English: Bookworm = +20
      • English/Math/Science/History: Genius = 10
  • e = Study Bonuses(only for classes)
    • For your main 4 classes, Math, History, Science, and English, you can study at libraries to help. Studying will grant you a +10 bonus and can be done a total of 3 times for a total bonus of +30.
  • r = Random Number
    • Selects a random number between 1 and 40 to add to the final score.

For every skill check, there is a goal determined by the selected skill check difficulty when starting a new game. A score will be calculated based on the aforementioned factors, and checks if it is above or below the skill check goal. If it is above, then hurray! You passed. If it is below, then you might need to increase your Skill Level, Ability Score, or simply be in a better mood and try again.

School Grades are calculated using a different system of skill checks called Ranked Skill Checks. The difference between Skill Checks and Ranked Skill Checks is that Skill Checks only have 1 positive and 1 negative outcome, while Ranked Skill Checks have different levels of positive and negative outcomes. Ranked Skill Checks are explained in the School Grades section.
